2017 Wrongful Conviction Awareness Day

Please join us at the Weldon Law Building (Room 105) for a thoughtful, engaging discussion moderated by El Jones in recognition of Wrongful Conviction Day on Tuesday, October 10 at 6:30pm.
Topics will include:
– Recognized and unrecognized causes and forms of wrongful convictions
– How vulnerable groups are disproportionately affected by wrongful convictions for large scale offenses (murder) and miscarriages of justice that take place on an every day level (guilty pleas)
– Difficulties incarcerated individuals face when asserting their innocence
– Remedies, including how we can help prevent wrongful convictions
Background Information
Wrongful Conviction Day:
Wrongful Conviction Day is a Canadian led-campaign to be marked in countries around the world on October 2. The campaign is designed to encourage the participation of the public and organizations. This includes educational institutes who are encouraged to set aside time to focus on the causes and remedies concerning wrongful convictions, an issue that affects and devastates individuals and societies worldwide.
The Innocence Movement:
Innocence Canada is a national non-profit organization, founded in 1993 and incorporated in 2000. Its purpose is to identify, advocate for, and exonerate individuals who have been convicted of a crime they did not commit, and to prevent wrongful convictions through legal education and reform. It has been successful in exonerating 21 Canadians. It has worked with innocence organizations from around the globe as well as individuals, businesses, schools, and other members of the public at large to recognize this important day for the past three years.
Wrongful Conviction day is not tied to any specific event, rather intended to provide an opportunity to unite with others to make as much impact as possible in our common cause of preventing and remedying wrongful convictions.
