45th annual conference of the Canadian Council on International Law

November 3, 2016 - November 5, 2016

The 45th edition of the conference is entitled “The Promise of International Law: Solutions for the World’s Crises”. The conference is organized by the Canadian Council on International Law (CCIL) and the Military Justice division of the Office of the Judge Advocate General of the Canadian Armed Forces.

International law experts constantly have to adapt to stay relevant in this fluctuating world. But one may wonder whether we are moving fast enough with technology? Can treaties and governance help in situations of constant changes? What about the differing levels of efficacy and enforceability? Is the current international legal system yielding enough solutions to address new crises? Most importantly, what are those potential solutions and what is the action-plan to move forward? All these issues, and more, will be discussed at the conference.

Professor Joanna Harrington is a panelist for the presentation on “Sexualized Violence: Accountability of Peacekeepers”.

Professor Fannie Lafontaine and Pascal Paradis, ASFC, are panelists for the presentation on “The Promise of International Law”.

Professor Penelope Simons is a panelist for the presentation on “The UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and Access to an Effective Remedy in Canada”.

Professor David Petrasek was a panelist for the presentation on “The Promise of International Criminal Law: Advances and Setbacks in Responding to Crises”.
